What are your techniques when you do digital art? Like how do you the lines so straight *~* cause your drawings are absolutely amazing!

pygmylouis:

thank you!! you mean just general photoshop techniques? i can offer a few:

  • the key to straight lines is holding shift while you draw—that’ll give you perfect vertical or horizontal lines. for different angles just rotate your canvas so that the line you want falls horizontally or vertically
  • i draw using as few layers as possible. when i sketch, i just draw directly on the background layer, construction lines and everything. layers are excellent but not always necessary & i hate having too many
  • with sketching, i draw using a bunch of tiny little scritch-scratchy lines. for clean lineart, it’s as few lines as possible done in long sweeps. i tend to turn off opacity pressure control & avoid wobbliness by drawing the lines in quick flicks—it can take a few tries to get it the right angle, but it ultimately looks better than wiggly lines or multiple strokes overlapping
  • i never use pure black or pure white—they flatten drawings. it’s much better to use shades with some hue to them that tie your color scheme together
  • instead of the eraser tool, i switch between my foreground & background color on my brush. i’ll leave the eraser at a larger brush size so that i can switch to it when i need to clear a bigger area, but otherwise it’s easier to just hit x and draw over with white (and i don’t even use the eraser on my tablet pen because it takes too long to get the cursor back into the proper position after tbh)
  • i’ve mentioned this before, but the easiest way to ‘clean up’ a messy sketch is to trace a thick outline around the entire silhouette. instantly looks much more tied together

yeahhh there’s a handful of key stuff i do every time i draw? hopefully this has been enlightening
